The Challenge

The campaign ran in a hostile information environment. Organised counter-campaigns had been active since February, using coordinated inauthentic behaviour to pre-emptively discredit Aurat March. Any hashtag strategy had to account for hijacking risk.

Participation also needed to feel accessible — not just activist-facing — to reach people who were sympathetic but not yet mobilised.

Strategic Approach

The hashtag architecture was built in two layers: a primary campaign hashtag specific enough to resist hijacking, and secondary hashtags tied to specific events and cities that could travel independently.

Twitter Spaces were used as a broadcast and conversation mechanism — not just for converted audiences but as an entry point for curious observers.

Impact

The campaign reached audiences Aurat March had not previously been able to engage — particularly men over 35 and people in smaller cities who encountered it through the trending tab.

No hashtag hijacking succeeded during the campaign window — largely due to the two-layer architecture and real-time monitoring.

Lessons & Insights

Disinformation is a logistics problem more than a messaging problem. Campaigns that build a response framework before launch are significantly more resilient than those that improvise under pressure.

Twitter Spaces remain the most underutilised tool in Pakistani digital activism. The format allows for nuance that text limits cannot — and real-time urgency that pre-planned content cannot replicate.
